1. Multi-year comparison report

   Is there a way to generate a multi-year report comparing multiple years in one report? Only way I've been able to do anything remotely close is to generate multiple reports and cycling between the tabs but it would be nice to be able to have all the information on one report separated by columns.

2. Add user levels access (username/password), Setting MySql or Postgresql Database

   Need user level access, with username and password.

   Need database setting, for administrator only, not for all users. This is very important, to make database secure from all users access.

3. Save read-only status in the "recent" entries

   when you use "open" you can specify "read-only" seems to work fine but... it looks like its not saving that in the "recent" entries. which means you need to redo all the path all-over again every time with the open if this would be saved with the "recent" entry it would be very very nice. Also along those lines . it would be nice to document that to create a read only access you need to "grant" insert update and delete to db.gnclock and select to db.*

4. Allow csv import of historical quotes

   Ever since the online quotes support ended, update stock prices has become a tedious process. The user must go through the gui, find each stock and enter each price one at a time.

   Yahoo and others allow users to export stock information to a .csv file. Provide a mechanism to allow users to import stock prices from a .csv file. Perhaps something similar to how users can now import transaction data from .csv.

6. Enable searches to be saved.

   Saved Searches would enable recurring or complex searches to be re-executed without having to reconfigure them anew. Also, if savable, then specific criteria could be adjusted, like parameters, to perform like searches in various ways, again saving the user time.

8. Add memo field to 1-line view

   As landscape monitors have become much more common, it would be nice if GnuCash would use some of that extra space. It would be nice to have the option to include the Memo field in the 1-line view.

9. Dashboard

   Create a dashboard which users can customise by choosing some key accounts to populate it with. Ideally the dashboard can be selected to remain on screen at all times and has buttons for going backwards and forwards in time, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year

10. Import Quicken Data Files

    Although the documentation claims GnuCash can import QFX and / or QIF files, it cannot. I exported one Quicken account file (a brokerage firm account file containing stocks, cash "category" / "account" mutual funds and annuities. For the QFX import, a blank "Generic Import transaction matcher" window appears. Clicking the "OK" button does nothing. Clicking the close window gadget closes the window but nothing appears in the main window. No new account.

    For QIF, paging through numerous panes makes it look like the import is happening until the final "QIF Import" pane after the "Book" options panel selections are made. Multiple alerts, "A bug was detected converting the QIF data" appear. After the last one ("A bug was detected while detecting duplicates.") is closed SOME of the holdings in the account appear, others do not.

    Also, it appears that prices for securities need to be manually input as they were not imported (imported "accounts" show values of $0) and I find no way to get an online price update. So there appears no way to track profit-loss / capital gains for tax purposes without manually setting up "Lots" and entering 30 yrs of price, stock split, and dividend re-investment info making the whole point of the program kinda useless.

    Finally, it appears to have no way to deal with annuity contracts held in "Trading" accounts whether imported or not.

    Without adding / fixing all the above, GnuCash is basically a waste of time and certainly not a Quicken replacement (as aged and flawed as it has become due to lack of competition).

11. A series of related ideas that will improve register readability and create a tagging mechanism

    1. Add a notes column (narrow by default) to the "main" register display line. Monitors are wider and adding a narrow column should not hamper those who prefer double-line mode to see notes. But allowing for a notes field effectively doubles the number of transaction per screen for those for whom seeing notes is important. I have modified my source code to accomplish this, the chnage is trivial to implement.

    2. Allow users to associate a foreground color with an account, that color whould be used for the acount name when displayed in a register. By allocating different colors to different types of accounts, it makes the displaying of only leaf names much more viable as an option when viewing a register, again making more efficient use of screen display space. (Not to mention color being a better way to convey the type of an account in a listing (category, checking, brokerage, tag, etc). Background color serves a different purpose and would not work will in the register listing.

    3 Get rid of the blank line at the end of a split transaction listing. Add a menu option for "Add split" that would add a blank line when needed. All those blank lines make the register listing less readable (useless "noise") and decreases the efficient use of screen space.

    1. Add an "auto-expand" view mode as a variant to "auto-split". Auto-expand would be like Basic-Ledger except for split transactions, which would be output in split mode (all the split transactions, not the "current" transaction as in auto-split). Auto-expand seems much more useful to me than auto-split).

    2. Differentiate between a blank dollar amount for a transaction and a 0 dollar amount. Blank means unknown amount, 0 means 0 amount. Auto download of transactions is very limited in which institutions it works with. A viable alternative is using scheduled transactions for transactions that occur at regular times (interest payments, credit card payments, etc). It would be useful to be able to have transactions in the register that show blank dollar amounts (meaning an amount has not yet been determined) and ones that show a $0 amount (the amount is known but is 0, say a credit card payment that is zero for that month).

    3. Add the capabilty to order/reorder splits.

    4. Have a new way of outputting a split transaction where all but 2 of the splits have blank dollar amounts. The top line of the output would be the transaction as it would be listed if the blank-amount splits were not present. Under that line would be the blank-amount splits, output as in split mode. This creates a versatile mechanism that among other things can be used to implement tags without radically changing the basic infrastructure in Gnucash. Consider a bunch of tag "accounts": TAG:tag1, TAG:tag2, etc. To tag a transaction, add a split with TAG:tag1 as the account and leave the amount blank. When the transaction is displayed, it will show up the same as if it was not tagged except there will additional line(s) for each tag associated with the transaction.

    5. In addition to associating a file or URL with a transaction, add the capability to link two transactions. Each transaction would be associated with the other. (I would make this separate from the file/url association so there could be both but if simplicity demands it, would settle for it to essentially be a third option in the association mechanism.) This would also require a mechanism for deleting the link. This creates an alternative mechanism for creating a tagging effect, but tagging that associates a dollar amount that is different than (or the same as) the transaction dollar amount. (If it does not make sense to have a balancing entry for the amount tagged, that balance amount can always be dumped in to a Trash account for that purpose.) In my case, I like to think of my assets as being "foreground" (for day-to-life) and "background" (reserves for emergency and retirement funds). When I move funds between fore and back, in addition to the actual transaction I like to create a matching transaction such as one between accounts FORE-OUT and BACK-IN. I can do that now by making the transaction a split transaction, but that results less readable split-transactions in the listing. What I really want is two transactions that are linked together.

    Items 1-6 relate to register readability and making more efficent use of display space. Items 7-8 build upon existing infratructure to create a general purpose mechanism that among other things would support tagging. Some of the 1-6 are important in making 7-8 more valuable.

    Because most of these use existing infrastructure and are in some case just a change in output format, I suspect the package of ideas could be implemented with minimal effort. I have already implemented item 1, it was trivial, see the post

12. Support XBRL standards (SBR)

    Support the new XBRL digital format standard.

    XBRL is widely used, and even mandatory now a days by the authorities and government. In The Netherlands for example they force you to use SBR (Standard Business Reporting). SBR is also based up-on the XBRL.

    Standarizion gets more and more important. If GnuCash does not agree with focusing on digital standards, I do not see a good future.

13. Add Price Editor batch import for currencies

    In my country Nicaragua, the central bank publish the exchange rate between USD and NIO, so we can get the value of 1 USD in NIOs with anticipation,

    I was trying to use the Online Price Retrival, but it use yahoo fincances, the yahoo finances does not have choice of change to NIO currency.

    I was thinking that it could be useful to import several exchange rate of multiple currencies at same time, using a csv file.

14. Process payments button

    Can you add a 2 new button for customer/vendor procesing payment. Hurts my hand every time i had to proces payments and have to multiple times go thry menu. it woud be so much sipler to add that buttons for procesing palyments or add an option for procesing window to open again after confirming payments...

    How hard is that?

15. Provide an archive function

    From what I can tell, the only way to effectively do an archive is to open a new account -- pick the day you want to start "as of", then place the opening balance that the account had as of that date. Then copy over the transactions into the new account. The "old" account would have all transaction before the "as of" date, and the "new" account would have all the transaction after the as of date. It's a lot of work. An archive function would be so much nicer. That way, I could get rid of transactions that are over 10 years and place them in a "archive transactions" account.

16. Asset Allocation

    I am surprised to see this wasn't requested before and would like to be brief initially.
    One feature I really need as a part of the financial software package is Asset Allocation. There is a lot written on the concept and basically means we assign each investment (stock/etf or other) to an asset class. Then we assign a percentage this asset class should be allocated out of our overall portfolio.
    Updating prices allows us to see how asset class allocations move and how much are they offset from out desired allocation.

    I have the idea implemented in Money Manager Ex for Android.
    Technically, this could be implemented as another field on the asset/investment account and a report which displays the dis/allocation (the pre-set allocation and the current allocation, with the differences between the two).

    I am happy to contribute implementation in the mobile version and am hoping someone would be interested in implementing this in the desktop version of GnuCash.

17. High DPI Support

    It would be great if GnuCash would support high DPI screens. For example, my 13.3" laptop has a screen resolution of 3200x1800 and several elements of GnuCash's UI are close to invisible. This is a significant issue for many users, especially as screen DPIs continue to climb.

    Gnome applications (I run Gnome shell on wayland) appear to scale very well. This gives me hope that high DPI issues in GnuCash can be addressed easily.

18. Add setting for reports location.

    Would love to be able to save reports to a specific folder, preferably one associated with the account file the report applied to. So when working on an account only the 'saved reports' applicable to that account would be available thereby reducing clutter when selecting a report to run. It would also simplify sharing the account and reports with other users.

19. Account page columns for multiple previous periods

    On the accounts page, I'd like an available column for not just Total (period), but Total (previous period). Ideally, I'd set up an Accounts tab with columns for Total (current period), Total (n-1), Total (n-2), using the Accounts page as a more dynamic version of a cash flow report.

20. Change the "red line" to a hard date instead of "x days back in time."

    This allows one to close a period, disabling changes to a register after a certain date. Right now, the red line floats a certain number of days in the past, which is helpful, but doesn't allow one to "hard-close" a reporting period.

    Nice, but not as critical, would be the ability to set a different red line for individual accounts (each of which is no earlier than the books-wide, master red line).
