This is an accounting package that adheres to standard accounting practices. In my opinion, it should not be modified to fit a completely non-standard approach (or lack of understanding) to accounting.

I think this is a function of the GTK package that GnuCash uses, but in any case the column sizing is very buggy. Furthermore, there is no way that I have found to copy the column settings from one account to another (which would also allow a user to recover from a messed up setting in one account register).

And just what will this get us? Better performance, or bragging rights?

This feature is partially available in 2.6.5 with the "Red Line" option in "Properties" ("File" pull-down menu), but that only specifies a number of days (which of course can be set to 30 or 365 to detect "wrong month/year" issues). It's not a big issue with me, but given the code for the "red line" feature, this shouldn't be that difficult to implement.

This is already available: Mark the account as a "Placeholder".
