An error occurred while saving the comment acharles commentedActually, this is very sloppy accounting, and should be left to ms money. Assigning the imbalance arbitrarily to taxes (or any other presumption) is a way to gloss over errors making it more difficult to find and resolve errors. If you bought a candy bar at checkout but did not enter it, the cost (and calories) would be hidden in an inflated tax rate. Moreover, different items are often taxed at different rates. Many states do not tax food. Internet purchases only apply state tax if it is shipped from the same state as it is purchased.
A preferred way to handle this would be to apply formulas for the applicable tax rate for each entry.

An error occurred while saving the comment acharles commentedBeyond "hiding", GnuCash should allow user to choose (or switch) modes from basic personal finance, to SOHO, to civic group, to small nonprofit, to small retail business, to school, to political campaign, to real estate firm, to legal partnership, to medical practice, to town government, to what have you. I would start with the first five and allow others to be added as they are developed.
This does not directly add functionality, but limits the presentation of diverse features to users who need them. It also would best adapt to the vocabulary of the specific market (ie personal vs nonprofit vs business).

This should not be enabled by default. I presume most organisations/businesses would prefer to close out their fiscal year before upgrading. You don't want new bugs or changes in interface to hit you midstream.
