We’re working on it, but our predecessors made some bad design decisions and so there’s core code in UI files where it doesn’t belong. It’s going to take a while to get that untangled.
In the meantime you can write custom reports in Scheme and use the Scheme, Python, or C bindings to work with the engine objects. We use “backend” to refer to data storage, either SQL or XML. If you select a SQL backend (File>Save As, select SQL at the top of the dialog box) you can then use SQL queries to extract data and create reports.

An error occurred while saving the comment Denis Clijsters commentedAgreed, a must have, I've tried to Gnucash Mysql, ... but the Mysql version is really bad as well.. I understand a lot of work will be needed, ... complete separation of the core QOF library so these can be fully ported to mobile (to prevent double work, when changing are done to the business logic side), ... this is being done but looks like a multi year project.. This could pave the way for a better client-server setup (ynab is a SaaS application, Gnucash will need to have it's own configurable client-server option)
I wonder that if, as work around, the current export features of the mobile version can be expanded to use the same dropbox/googledrive/cloud storage files with a big warning that the version on your desktop must be closed before saving anything via your phone.. not ideal but a first way..

I've used nearly all my votes, otherwise I'd definitely give this all 3! Gnucash needs some more, ..... cash, ... to speed up development
