    A warning window with an option to either save the imbalance to the imbalance account (because you might no know how to solve it now), or return to the transaction because it was an oversight, wold b an option.

  2. provide per-transaction cancel of autofill, with ESC, initial backspace, or anything else that works

    Another user requesting the disabling of autofill. Either a Preferences item and/or a per transaction. The trailing space is a good idea, as accounting data entry is keyboard intensive, and adding a space does not interfere with the data entry flow.
