Record the date of the statement each transaction was reconciled to.
This allows one to go back and re-prove reconciled balances for prior periods, even though later periods have already been reconciled. You just sort transactions by the reconciliation date, rather than the transaction date, and your balance should still match the statement ending balance for the period in question.
GnuCash has always stored the reconcile date. It’s not available anywhere in the GUI nor AFAIK is it used by any standard reports, but it’s there.

Interesting. Is it the date on which the reconciliation was performed? Or the closing date of the statement to which the transaction was reconciled?
If the latter, all that would be needed would be a way to sort/filter transactions by that date and one could create a standard reconciliation report. If it is the former, then it is not really of any use.
