Autocomplete year for nearest date, instead of current year
Suppose it's 5th Jan 2011 and I'm entering transactions for December. If I type "20.12" (european) it is almost certain I mean 20.12.2010 (two weeks ago), not 20.12.2011 (one year in the future).
GnuCash should definitely guess the nearest date's year if it's less than 3 months ago, and probably also even if it's as much as 6 months ago.
This feature is already available in gnucash 2.4.4, where you can choose a “number of months in the past” etc.

You misunderstand the preference item, which is for setting the accounting period, a.k.a. the fiscal year, over which income and expenses are tallied to determine annual profit or loss, the number one submits to the tax authorities. A sliding window would be useless for that purpose.
The accounting period has no effect on the sliding data entry window.

In 2.6.16 the Date/Time in Preferences defaults to "In the current calendar year". Recommend changing the default to 11 month sliding window as most small businesses will not be entering future dated transactions and will often enter transactions from the prior year when doing year-end accounting and tax preparation.
