    I agree that GNUCash needs a lot of work to become a good program for budgeting.
    I can't speak for YNAB since I have never used it but if it works on the envelope system I am all for it. I recommend looking at the idea that Alan put forward as one good solution to the problem. I don't know how to link to the page but here is the address...

    This is an excellent idea. It appears to me that GNUCash is an great program for tax accounting and such but is a very poor program for budgeting. While charts and darts have their place, the easiest method of making a budget and sticking to your set spending goals is the tried and true "Envelope Budgeting Method". If GNUCash could implement your idea, it would become great at doing both accounting and budgeting.
